Reflecting on 2017: The Year in Review

Before writing this post, I reflected back at my reviews of 2016, 2015, and 2014. Each year had its challenges and victories, and each year I learned and grew both personally and professionally. The trend of growth continued this past year in 2017.

I love new challenges, new obstacles, and figuring out effective ways to solve new problems.

Professionally

In 2017, our team at Headway grew from 6 people to 15! It’s been amazing to be able to bring aboard so many amazing and passionate people. We’ve been working more on process and systems and while not everything is buttoned up, we’re starting to hit our stride in some areas.

We also hired our first remote team members and started opening up applications to talented designers and developers anywhere.

In 2017, I also took over as President of Digital Fertilizer and helped to bring and plan the first ever Green Bay Startup Week. Governor Walker declared the 1st week of November as Wisconsin Startup Week as a statewide initiative, lead by Matt over at Startup MKE.

Personally

At the start of the year, along with the other members of our church community, made a BIG 10 list of the 10 things we were going to accomplish in 2017.

Of the 10, I completed 7. The other three I carried over into 2018 and am pursuing to knockout in Q1! In 2018, I’m making a big 10 list, but I’m breaking it up by quarter so there’s 3-4 items I’m focusing or continuing each quarter. Milestones and deadlines that add up to a final result. I believe this updated approach will help me focus and follow through.

Travel

In 2017, I was blessed travel a bit for work and for play.

Our First Home

Lauren and I have been on the home hunt on and off ever since we moved back from Hawaii in 2015, while we juggled our apartment lease. We made 2 offers on houses that weren’t accepted, but we made 1 that was and finally bought our first home!

The house’s structure and layout is great but the style inside is dated and is begging to be updated. We moved in November 20th and my Dad got to work painting the entire house, what a big difference the right paint colors can do. There’s still lots of work to do, perhaps I’ll share some of the projects as we take them on.

Growing Our Ohana

We welcomed Violet Lynne Verboncouer into the world on December 20th, 2017 at 10:16pm. She was 8lbs 11oz and 21″ long. Lauren labored for about 20 hours and pushed for 2+. It was a miracle to be such an intimate part of the entire day.

In Summary 2017

2017 was a great year of growth for myself, my family, and our business. I’m excited for what 2018 holds!

Cheers to you and I hope your 2018 is off to a great start!
